About
Tierra:
Tierra is a 315-acre
retreat and conference center. It is a mosaic of forests,
meadows and pastures tucked away in Sunitsch Canyon, five miles
up the Chumstick valley from Leavenworth WA. A stream flows through
the canyon and there is a pond and small wetland. Recently acquired
by new owners, the center's intent is to provide a space for the
interaction of spirituality and social change. In creating a Permaculture
design for the property, these elements will be considered.
Course
facilities:
There are many existing structures including
offices, large conference rooms, classrooms, large kitchen, dining
hall, houses and cabins. Shower facilities are available for campers.
There is a hot tub and we will construct a sweat lodge.
The Landscape:
The Wenatchee River watershed
drains a rugged part of the east slopes of the North Cascades
in central Washington. The Wenatchee River flows east
into the Columbia River. Leavenworth is situated on the Wenatchee
River where it bursts from the steep-sided Tumwater canyon.
Maples, ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir forests are common around
Tierra. Higher in the mountains are subalpine forests
and meadows and then timberline, krummholz, and alpine tundra.
Cottonwoods dominate much of the large valley bottoms and river
riparian zones. The lowest reaches of the Wenatchee watershed
border on the semi-arid Columbia Basin and only receive 10-15"
annual precipitation and support sagebrush steppe as well as
bunchgrass steppe. We will make field trips to some of these
ecosystems.
Accomodations:
Cabins are equipped with a double bed and a full bath. Participants
may camp in their own tents, vans or live-in rigs. Local participants
can commute from their homes. We are offering $100 off the course
fee for campers and commuters.
Food:
Three tasty, wholesome meals a day will be provided with an
emphasis on organic food. Be sure to note any health needs
or dietary preferences on your registration. Please note that
we are asking all course participants to take turns doing meal
preparation and clean-up.
Certification:
Course graduates will be certified as Permaculture Design
Trainees, and after two years experience will be eligible for
Applied Permaculture Design diplomas. Graduates are entitled to
use the term "Permaculture" in pursuit of livelihood, and for
educational purposes..
