Friends of the Trees Botanicals 2018 Catalog - Fresh and Dry Herbs

Image of herb plants.

This catalog offers 112 botanicals from 95 species. We grow or wildcraft all of them personally. 50 of the botanicals are wildcrafted, 50 are cultivated, and 12 we both grow and wildcraft. Origins: 36 species are Pacific Northwest natives. 17 are weedy non-natives naturalized in Washington State. We cultivate 58 species from Europe, Asia and the eastern US. The PDF version (see link at top) is easier to read.

  • 2018 is our 23rd year as a commercial botanicals business.
  • Our wildcrafting is done in the northern counties of Washington, Idaho and Northwest Montana.
  • Our wildcrafted botanicals are sustainably gathered to maintain healthy plant populations.

EDUCATION: Michael Pilarski teaches around the Pacific Northwest on farming and wildcrafting medicinal plants, permaculture, agroforestry, earth repair and related topics. Check out our website and Facebook for his schedule. Would you like Michael to give a workshop in your area or speak at your event? Please reach out. He also offers species surveys and plant walks!

2017 REPORT from Michael: 2017 was one of the biggest years for Friends of the Trees Botanicals due to expanded plantings (3 sites total), more help and more wildcrafted orders.

  • My second-year planting in Port Townsend, Washington, which is a medicinal agroforestry system with ginkgo, Paulownia and elderberry as the overstory. We expanded the planting in 2017 and expect to expand further in 2018.
  • We put in a new 1/4 acre herb planting at Finnriver Farm & Cidery in Chimacum, Washington. It is beautiful and productive. Thousands of farm tourists admired it.
  • We put in a large hugelkutur berm planting in Irondale, Washington and it also did fabulously.

2018 PREDICTIONS: We plan on increasing sales this year both of farmed and wildcrafted botanicals. We will slightly increase our plantings. We will probably reduce greenhouse seedling production. We will be selling herb divisions in the spring. Seed production will go up. We will be wildcrafting in western and eastern Washington.

A brief description of our growing practices: The herb plantings at Friends of the Trees Botanicals are agroforestry systems, which include a wide diversity of trees, shrubs, hedgerows, medicinal herbs, berries, vegetables and culinary herbs. I have been farming organically since 1972. I was one of the founders of Tilth in 1974. My herb plantings have been organic certified on and off over the years. Currently my botanicals are not certified organic, but they are grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We use cultural practices and natural fertilizers to build soil. Our goal is healthy plants, a healthy ecosystem and good yields. Our primary focus remains fresh plant material. We have a reputation for delivering the highest quality, fresh and dried botanicals available. Although we dry some botanicals above our firm orders, it helps us if you place orders for fresh and dried botanicals early in the season!
